Data Protection Scam
Any organisation holding any form of personal data needs to register with the Information Commissioner under the Data Protection Act. This is a far-reaching requirement but is a fairly straightforward procedure and can be done online by visiting www.dataprotection.gov.uk.The Information Commissioner warns that individuals are posing as "collectors on behalf of data protection" and requesting payment for registration. The Information Commissioner’s website has a list of these businesses, which are bogus. Some are charging as much as £95 plus VAT. The annual statutory notification fee is £35 on which no VAT is payable.
